Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani had a passionate reaction when she found out about Kamala Khan's origin change in the Disney+ show's finale. Premiered June 8 on the streaming service, Ms. Marvel introduces the 16-year-old Pakistani-American high school student and Captain Marvel superfan who gains the ability to harness cosmic energy and create hard light constructs through a magical bangle originally owned by her great-grandmother, Aisha. Even before her proper introduction on Disney+, Kamala was already confirmed for a future appearance in The Marvels.
While Ms. Marvel has received much critical acclaim, breaking a record for the highest-rated MCU show on Rotten Tomatoes, it has been criticized for the changes made to Kamala's origin story and powers. In Marvel comics, Kamala is an Inhuman, but in the MCU show, her powers are derived from a golden bangle with an added cosmic element. The recently aired Ms. Marvel finale revealed another surprising change to the beloved character from the comics. During the episode's final moments, Kamala's friend Bruno explains to her that she has a mutation in her genes. The moment is underlined by a variation of the X-Men Animated Series theme song playing in the background.
