The Ms. Marvel finale directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah reflect on the episode's twist introducing mutants to the MCU. In the show's last episode, «No Normal,» Kamala Khan learns from her friend Bruno that she has a «mutation» in her genetic DNA. Underscored by the inclusion of the X-Men '97 theme playing over the scene, this moment was the first mention of mutants in the Earth-616 MCU timeline, after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness saw an alternate version of Charles Xavier lead the Illuminati.
Making Kamala a mutant deviated from the source material, as Kamala is an Inhuman in the comics. This creative decision proved to be a major talking point on the heels of the finale's premiere. Many Ms. Marvel fans criticized Kevin Feige for further erasing Inhumans from the MCU. In contrast, Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani defended the new mutant origin, stating it aligns with the original vision for the comics. Now, the directors look back on the surprising twist.
