Iman Vellani, star of Disney+’s Ms. Marvel, recounts her first interaction with Marvel president Kevin Feige. Vellani plays Kamala Khan in the Disney+ show named after her hero, becoming the first South Asian Marvel superhero to lead their own project. As the final end credits scene teases, Vellani will reprise her role in the MCU in 2023 with The Marvels. The Marvels will be directed by Candyman’s Nia DaCosta and will be the follow-up to 2019’s Captain Marvel.
Not only is Ms. Marvel the 19-year-old actress’ first time in the MCU, but the Disney+ show actually marked Vellani’s on-screen debut. Prior to Ms. Marvel, Vellani had directed and acted in a few short films that she uploaded to Vimeo, but had never acted professionally. Vellani had been a Marvel fan for years, only to find out about the Ms. Marvel casting call. After going through rounds of auditions for the role, Vellani was cast as Kamala Khan in a unanimous decision from the casting team. She was told of the news on a Zoom call with Feige and other Marvel executives.

Though Feige’s revelation of her casting was certainly a momentous occasion for Vellani, the actress explains that her first in-person meeting with Feige was incredibly awkward. In a recent interview with Late Night with Seth Meyers, Vellani revealed that after meeting Feige for the first time, she just “stared at him until he left,” for she was so star-struck and nervous by him. After Ms. Marvel executive producer Sana Amanat kindly facilitated the next interaction between the two of them, Vellani gave Feige a four-page letter she had written to him.
