Ms. Marvel creator Bisha K. Ali explains the controversial decision to make Kamala Khan a mutant, changing the character's origin in the MCU. Joining the host of other MCU shows on Disney+, Ms. Marvel premiered at the beginning of June, earning rave reviews from critics and generally positive reviews from fans. The show features Iman Vellani as the titular Ms. Marvel, chronicling the character's introduction to her powers and the exploration of her mysterious family heritage.
After facing off against the Department of Damage Control in her Jersey City high school, the show's finale makes a major change to Ms. Marvel's origin, with her best friend, Bruno (Matt Lintz), explaining that he found mutations in her genes. In the comics, Ms. Marvel's power are essentially inherited, laying dormant until she is exposed to the Terrigen Mist. As with the changes to Ms. Marvel's powers themselves, the change to the character's origins is once more dividing fans. The reveal that Ms. Marvel is a mutant comes not long after the introduction of Patrick Stewart's Professor X variant into the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

In a new interview with Variety, Ali explains the controversial decision to change Ms. Marvel's origins, saying that making Kamala a mutant helped to fix a problem that came with the inherited nature of her powers. With Ms. Marvel's powers having been passed down to her, the question arose, Ali explains, of why other members of her family didn't also have those powers.
