Warning: Spoilers ahead for Ms. Marvel!
Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani has celebrated the revelation that her character is a mutant. The Ms. Marvel Disney+ show is an origin story for Kamala Khan, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's newest superhero. Kamala spent a large part of the series believing she was a Djinn, but in Ms. Marvel episode 6, Bruno revealed to her that there was something strange about her genes — a mutation other members of her family did not possess. A recognizable riff on the classic X-Men: The Animated Series theme tune played in the background, seemingly confirming to viewers that Ms. Marvel is the MCU's first official mutant.
Marvel Studios regained the film rights to mutants when Disney acquired the bulk of Fox's film and TV empire in 2014 and there's since been intense speculation over how they would be woven into the main MCU timeline. Already there have been some subtle nods; Black Widow introduced a character called Ursa Major (a mutant in the comics), while The Falcon & the Winter Soldier featured the X-Men-related island of Madripoor. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness recently featured an alternate-universe version of Professor X, with Patrick Stewart himself reprising his iconic role. But now mutants are officially part of the mainstream MCU, and Ms. Marvel is the first.
