Making her first appearance in 2013, Khan is one of the newest Marvel superheroes. While she’s borderline obsessed with the Avengers as a whole, her personal favorite and role model is Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. The Disney+ show dives into Khan’s backstory, revealing many twists that will affect the MCU moving forward, some a bit more confusing than others. In the third episode, Khan discovers that her powers and her ancestors might be connected to beings known as Djinn.
According to Islamic folklore, Djinns are supernatural beings with incredible and frightening power. Some tales in Islamic culture describe Djinns as angels or genies, beings that can protect or heal; whereas other tales tell of Djinns to be synonymous with demons. The Qur’an explains that Djinns are spirits with free will, so they aren’t inherently good or evil. However, if a Djinn is injured or treated poorly by someone, they’ll become hostile.
Many Djinns remain unseen to the naked eye, due to their immense power and abilities. While certain individuals can identify as Djinn, they’re mostly hidden from the majority of humans and tend to not interfere. But in some cases, it’s said that Djinns have mated with humans and produced offspring, though it’s unknown whether their children possess the same powers or abilities.
