While Marvel Studios is developing a Marvel Zombies animated series for Disney+, Star Wars already has a story that could serve as the perfect counterpart. Coming from a non-canonical novel which some elements having been brought back into the official continuity, the galaxy far, far away has its own zombies capable of plaguing the stars. As such, the storyis prime source material to be turned into a dynamic animated series.
Written in 2009 by Joe Schreiber, Death Troopers is a Legends tale about a prison ship that comes across a seemingly abandoned Star Destroyer. However, it's quickly revealed that something incredibly dark and horrific has happened to the entire crew and garrison of stormtroopers on board, a discovery made by the prison ship with lethal results. With only a few survivors left who are joined by Han Solo and Chewbacca, it's revealed that a major virus claimed the Star Destroyer known as the Blackwing virus, capable of reviving necrotic tissue and creating an entire legion of undead zombie stormtroopers. The virus claims many of the prisoners as well before the survivors escape, seeing the small band also having to evade undead Wookiees. Schreiber would also go on to pen Red Harvest in 2010, a prequel revealing the origins of the virus during the Old Republic era with Blackwing plaguing an entire Sith academy before it was contained (temporarily).

Thanks to Death Troopers, Star Wars already has a story that's perfectly suited to the zombie sub-genre. While Schreiber's novels might not be a part of the official Star Wars canon, the Blackwing virus itself still is. Featured in a visual dictionary for 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars
