The changes made to Kamala Khan’s powers in Ms. Marvel have not impacted the series nearly as much as many expected them to, but the fight sequences in episode 4 have demonstrated that the show still has a big problem for its powers to overcome. In the comics, Ms. Marvel’s powers are much like those of Mr. Fantastic – she can stretch to her will, grow larger and smaller and “embiggen” her fists to attack enemies. The MCU has gone a different route, providing the franchise’s newest hero with a bangle that grants Kamala the ability to summon hard light, which can then be manipulated into objects.
With the release of the show’s trailer, the Ms. Marvel power changes became the central talking point of the series. Some believed that the infidelity from the comics would change the character too far from the one that many have grown to love, and would spoil the series in the process. Ms. Marvel’s first three episodes, however, proved these fears to be unnecessary, with the hard light concept working to a better effect than many expected.

With these first episodes dedicated to Kamala discovering and coming to terms with her powers, the capabilities of the hard light concept have not been tested in many combat situations. Kamala’s fight with the Djinn at the end of episode 3 provided the first teaser of what her powers might look like in action, but this was expanded in Ms. Marvel episode 4.
