showrunner Francesca Sloane is speaking out about recent reports claiming that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine may not be returning for another season of the Prime Video spy dramedy.
While Mr. and Mrs. Smith has been renewed for a second season at Amazon, Glover and Erskine — who play John and Jane in the series — are “not expected to return,” according to sources close to Variety. However, in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the showrunner’s latest comment suggests that the stars may or may not be leaving after all.
“I was just talking to Donald last night about this and we were laughing, because one of the pieces of press said, ‘according to our sources,’ and we’re like, ‘Who are these sources?'” said Sloane. “We wrote a cliffhanger, we thought about it long and hard. It was one of the first things that we wrote. Why in the world — we haven’t said anything — but why in the world would we ruin a cliffhanger based on a headline?”
Though Sloane did not specifically answer whether Glover and Erskine are actually leaving, she revealed that they haven’t even started writing Season 2 yet, so both the stars’ characters may or “may not be dead.”
“We didn’t even get to start writing [season 2] yet. Maya and Donald may be dead; they may not be dead … there will be an answer as to what happened at the end of season 1 in season 2,” Sloane added.
As the showrunner said, the first season of the spy series ended with a cliffhanger, leaving audiences with questions as to whether or not John and Jane Smith survive the gunfire at the end of Season 1. But according to her, there will be an answer once Season 2 hits the streamer.
The series is a reimagined story told in the same universe as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s 2005 movie of the same name. It follows two strangers as they both land a job at a spy agency that promises to provide them with a luxurious life. However, having been given new identities, the two of them must also adhere to the arranged marriage.
