Magic: the Gathering unveiled the first look at its collaboration with Final Fantasy today during a panel at MagicCon Vegas, as well as what the landscape of the iconic card game looks like in 2025.
During a group of panels today at MagicCon Vegas, Wizards of the Coast unveiled its plans for Magic's future, namely how its slate of sets will play out in 2025, including first looks at Foundations, the upcoming Standard sets as well as first glimpses at the Universes Beyond sets coming next year.
The big news is a change to Universes Beyond now being Standard legal — at least the three sets releasing sometime next year. This means we'll see the likes of Emet Selch or Sephiroth take the same stage as Tarkir's Sarkhan and Aetherdrift's Daretti across the Pro Tour stage starting next year.
The upcoming Final Fantasy X Magic The Gathering Universes Beyond set will feature characters, summons, behemoths, weapons, and more from across all sixteen titles in the series. Characters revealed so far include Terra from Final Fantasy VI, Tidus and Yuna from Final Fantasy X, as well as everyone's favorite Ascian, Emet Selch from Final Fantasy XIV.
While we don't have exact details on the individual cards coming from the set, Wizards did announce that the Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set will include the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork ever assembled in a single game, as well as artwork from legendary artists on the franchise.
The artwork also looks incredible, highlighting not just the characters, but iconic moments from the franchise, including Sephiroth dropping from a height, sword poised to strike, as well as Tidus and Yuna, locked in an embrace.
Magic's Final Fantasy set releases next year on June 13th, and will slot within the standard rotation next year, which will include the recently announced Spider-man set coming sometime in 2025, another UB set, as well as three in-universe Magic sets.
