Lonely Planet will be available to watch on Netflix on October 11, 2024.
“A reclusive novelist arrives at a prestigious writer’s retreat in Morocco, hoping the remote setting will unlock her writer’s block,” the logline for the movie reads. “While there, she meets a young man — what starts as an acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair.”
Along with Dern and Hemsworth, the film stars Diana Silvers, Younès Boucif, Adriano Giannini, and Rachida Brakni.
“What drew me to the story was the exploration of identity and self-worth within relationships, especially in a world as intellectually charged as the literary scene,” Dern said of the movie, via Netflix’s Tudum. “The dynamic between the younger man and the older, established writer intrigued me because it’s not just about romance — it’s about finding someone who truly sees and understands you, which is something deeply human and relatable.”
Lonely Planet is Grant’s second time directing a feature film following 2006’s Catch and Release. She also co-created and served as a showrunner on Netflix’s Unbelievable, which was released in 2019 and stars Toni Collette, Merritt Wever, and Kaitlyn Dever.
Additionally, Grant is credited as a writer on 1995’s Pocahontas, 2000’s 28 Days, 2000’s Erin Brockovich (which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay), 2005’s In Her Shoes, 2006’s Charlotte’s Web, 2009’s The Soloist, and 2016’s The 5th Wave.
Grant produces the new Netflix movie alongside Liza Chasin and Sarah Timberman. Brendan Ferguson, Corinne Weber, and Margaret Chernin serve as executive producers.
