Upgradeable laptop maker Framework has spotted a niche and gone for it, putting a Steam Deck compatible 2TB SSD upgrade up for sale as part of their PC parts marketplace.
Framework is starting to sell the 2TB Western Digital SN740 2230 for $299 in their US and Canada store – though are now out of stock – and are exploring their options for stocking in Europe and Australia in future.
The challenge that Steam Deck owners have for upgrading their handheld is in getting an SSD that is the right size. While the Steam Deck uses a standard M.2 keyed NVMe SSD, Valve opted for the small 2230 size that’s more suited to the form factor, as opposed to the much more common and longer 2280 SSDs.
The Framework Laptop uses the latter, but the company’s supply chain already includes Western Digital, and they were able to add the SN740 in the 2230 size to their order. The drives are also compatible with a number of Surface laptops and tablets, and other devices with size constraints.
Do note that, if you want to expand the internal storage on your Steam Deck, you will need to be fairly comfortable with taking it apart. Teardown and upgrade specialists iFixit created a Steam Deck upgrade guide that you can follow.
