Warning! Spoilers ahead for Jujutsu Kaisen 181!
The newest member of Kinji Hakari's Gachinko Fight Club in Jujutsu Kaisen is essentially a more tragic version of Maruo from the floundering Shonen Jump series Ayashimon.
The Gachinko Fight Club has been on the backburner ever since Jujutsu Kaisen began focusing on Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro and Yuta Okkotsu's exploits during the Culling game. But now that Yuta's battle against his three other opponents just ended in chapter 181, now is apparently as good a time as any to bring Jujutsu Kaisen's more brutal fight club back to the forefront with aspiring mangaka Charles Bernard.

Although not a mangaka by any means, Ayashimon's Maruo bases his entire existence on experiencing a key moment that most manga heroes undergo when dueling against a particularly powerful foe. Jujutsu Kaisen's Charles Bernard has a similar mentality. He basically wants to fight in the Culling game because he doesn't like how it has negatively affected the manga creators and artists he respects. (It's also assumed, however, that this is just an excuse to explain to himself why he hasn't been succeeding.) But that's apparently not a good enough reason, and he doesn't like how the purpose of the Culling game is negative, so he asks Kinji to give him another reason because, in his own words, "a battle manga needs to give readers something positive."
Just based on the absurdity of Charles' request, it appears as though he's basically trying to emulate the experience of method acting from a mangaka's perspective to create a truly inspiring battle manga. His dismal track record in getting his stories serialized supports this theory quite well as
