DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn recently revealed on social media that he has plans for the character characters in his DC Universe.
Gunn was asked on Twitter whether or not he had any plans for Static or other Milestone characters in the DCU, be it animated projects or an “Elseworlds” movie or series. Gunn didn’t reveal much in his response, simply saying that he did.
Yes
Virgil Hawkins, better known as the hero Static, is probably the most well-known character to come from Milestone Comics — an imprint of DC that was founded by a coalition of African-American artists and writers, including Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle in an effort to bring more representation of minority stories in the world of comics.
Since his debut, Static has gone on to become a fan-favorite character due in part to his adaptation in the hit animated series Static Shock.
Other classic Milestone characters include Icon — a superhero that has similar powers to Superman, Starlight — a character that has electromagnetic radiation flowing through her, Hardware — a genius inventor who develops a robotic exoskeleton for himself, and Rocket — a character who gains superpowers following the Big Bang, which was an event that took place in the Milestone Comics world.
The DC Universe’s first phase, called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, will feature a multitude of different movies and television shows. A few of the announced projects include Superman: Legacy, a Batman and Robin-focused movie called The Brave and the Bold, a Supergirl movie titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing film, and multiple TV shows.
