Jack Black Will Reportedly Play Steve in Upcoming Minecraft Film
Jack Black will join the cast of the upcoming Minecraft movie, according to a new report over at Deadline. No plot details on the film are currently available, but the report suggests Black will play the role of Steve.
The film, which is a collaboration between Warner Bros, Vertigo, Legendary, Microsoft/Mojang and Jason Momoa’s production company, On The Roam, is being directed by Jared Hess and stars Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. Producers attached to the project include Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Torfi Frans Olaffson, Vu Bui, and the late Jill Messick.
Jack Black is no stranger to video game adaptations, having starred in 2023’s Super Mario Bros. movie, where he played the role of the series’ iconic villain, Bowser. Black will also star as Claptrap in the upcoming film adaptation of Gearbox Software’s Borderlands game series, which is being directed by Eli Roth and is currently set for an August 9, 2024 release.
With over 300 million copies sold and roughly 140 million monthly active users, Minecraft is currently the best selling game of all time. Super Mario Bros. raked in $1.36B in 2023, so it should be interesting to see where the Minecraft film lands once it releases to theaters.
