As you search for Bright Blood in to progress, you may stumble across Medigems accidentally. You can't start picking up Medigems until you have the upgrade that allows you to carry Medkits, so don't bother collecting them during your first couple of runs. Use that time to learn the game's mechanics, including the unique skills of specific characters.
When you purchase the Pherus Bit upgrade that allows you to hold Medkits, you can start picking up Medigems from the Overgrowth.
