After launching last week on Steam and PlayStation 5, the latest hero shooter on the market, Concord, couldn't have had a more lackluster reception on PC.
The PvP hero shooter launched last week, bringing yet another first person hero shooter to the market in a market already saturated with them. After being in development for eight years (for reference, Overwatch originally launched eight years ago), the shooter launched with a whimper on PC.
As pointed out by Forbes' Paul Tassi, on Steam Concord was greeted by an unceremonious 697 players. While PS5 numbers are unknown, it's a damning indictment of what is, by all accounts good, but forgetful shooter. By contrast, Valve's MOBA/Hero shooter hybrid, Deadlock, was finally unveiled (despite being the worst-kept secret in games for weeks) with a staggering 89K players in action (76K of them currently in game on a Monday afternoon).
Things haven't really gotten much better for Concord. As of this writing, 252 players are in the game, and the shooter still hasn't surpassed that 697 concurrent player peak from three days ago, according to SteamDB. Part of this could simply be down to the fact that Concord isn't a free-to-play hero shooter like many of its competitors on the market. With a $40 price tag, some potential players could simply be waiting for a sale, or heading back into Overwatch 2, Valorant, or, potentially, part of the Deadlock testing.
Either way, it'll be interesting to watch how Concord progresses from here, and whether or not it will ever gain the traction Sony was hoping for.
