Following its anticipated launch, Helldivers 2 has beaten God of War to become Sony's highest-played game ever on Steam. While Helldivers 2 features strong gameplay that attracts plenty of shooter fans, some users have grown frustrated after its rocky release, but this hasn't stopped it from outperforming other Sony heavyweights on Steam.
God of War was released on Steam in January of 2022. Similar to other high-profile Sony games, its Steam release came well after its initial launch on PlayStation, which likely hampered its peak concurrent player count. Despite this, it peaked at over 73,000 players and became a hit with those who could not previously purchase the game on PlayStation. In contrast, Helldivers 2 has benefited from a simultaneous launch on both PlayStation and PC, and in one aspect, the popular shooter has overtaken all Sony games to ever be released on Steam.
Twitter account SteamDB posted an image showing Sony's highest-played games on Steam, with Helldivers 2 now sitting atop the pile with a peak concurrent player count of over 81,000 users. The previously mentioned God of War comes in second, Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition comes in third, and The Last of Us Part 1 is fourth. The popularity of the first Helldivers and the promising gameplay of Helldivers 2 has caused the game to outperform the other anticipated Steam releases by a wide margin. However, Helldivers 2 users have experienced frustrating bugs following its launch, including matchmaking, login, and crashing issues. Arrowhead recently released a Helldivers 2 patch for PC players that improved matchmaking for some users, but many fans are still reporting problems. Arrowhead confirmed that PlayStation users can expect a similar patch soon.
