Though the game has only just launched, the Helldivers 2 player community is already at work devising a set of common tips, tricks and etiquette for playing the game with others. These rules help players who may be struggling in the heavily team-play-focused game, as well as guide them in making the most of the unique (and comedic) mechanics found in Helldivers 2.
Games that call for in-depth cooperation among different players predate the internet, but the advent of online multiplayer posed new challenges and possibilities for games to demand coordinated team play in real time. Though the original game in the series was a top-down shooter, Helldivers 2 is a more traditional third-person game, putting it in the company of classic co-op shooters like Left 4 Dead as it pits its team of Super Earth soldiers against endless hordes of aliens and assorted enemies. Unlike some co-op games, though, Helldivers 2 can be punishing towards careless teammates, as it allows team members to hurt and even kill each other with accidental friendly fire.

User RhuanSqx on the Helldivers subreddit came up with a list of unspoken Helldivers rules that they thought people should know. The rules covered a set of best practices to help new players get accustomed to the unique qualities of Helldivers 2, the better to mold them into capable squad members. Some of the tips might seem obvious to players familiar with the genre, like not crossing into a teammate's line of fire, while others were based on mechanics more unique to Helldivers itself.
Other Helldivers 2 players jumped in, verifying the rules' usefulness and suggesting new ones.
