The game director for Helldivers 2 has confirmed a horrifying detail about Terminids, revealing that the bug-like aliens are able to smell players. As one of two enemy factions in Helldivers 2, Terminids can be difficult to sneak by, and there's now confirmation as to why that is.
In Helldivers 2, players are embroiled in a galactic war, defending Super Earth from the horrors of Terminids and Automatons in an effort to protect democracy. With Automatons being bloodthirsty robots, Terminids are bug-like alien monsters that also happen to be rich in oil reserves when they decompose, making them a valuable resource as well as a dangerous enemy. The recent addition of mechs to Helldivers 2 has made fighting these pesky aliens a little bit more manageable, but they have still proven themselves to be a difficult enemy overall. When it comes to trying to stealth play one's way past Terminids, it can sometimes go very wrong, and the director of Helldivers 2 has confirmed the reason for difficult stealth.
Game director and Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Johan Pilestedt recently joined streamer OperatorDrewsky during a play session, where it was confirmed that Terminids have a sense of smell that can detect players. The lore of Helldivers 2 is rich with interesting details, and this is just another layer that Arrowhead Game Studios has managed to pull off in order to make the game more challenging.
Although trying to be stealthy in Helldivers 2 is difficult, it's not impossible. Players have to be close to Terminids in order for them to truly get a whiff of nearby players. Pilestedt stated,“They also have an approximation of smell within a close radius.
