Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight remains one of the most popular cultural touchstones in the twenty-first century, proving just how influential the Clown Prince of Crime of DC Comics truly is. Ledger's performance birthed numerous iconic moments, including the line, «Do you want to know how I got these scars?» which is repeated several times in the film. The line not only got at the ambiguity of Joker's origins, but also at intimidation tactics that he regularly uses against his enemies. Now, a new issue of Detective Comics takes the idea behind Joker's Dark Knight line and gives it an even scarier twist.
In Detective Comics #1057 from Mariko Tamaki, Amancay Nahuelpan, Jordie Bellaire, and Ariana Maher, Gotham's newest villain, Ana Vulsion, corners a wounded Psycho Pirate in the depths of Arkham Tower. Enraged that he had mind controlled her and the rest of the Arkham inmates, making them docile versions of themselves, Vulsion says to him, «Do you know how I got these cuts? Men gave me these. Men who wanted to control me. I cut myself, after that. First to punish my own weakness. Then I realized it was only another manifestation of their control over me. That's when I started hurting them.»
