The American Idol contestant Kevin Gullage impressed everyone with his stellar performances, but wasn't in the Top 24 reveal episode of the show. Kevin, a 23-year-old musician from New Orleans, Louisiana, impressed the judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan with his stunning and soulful rendition of Otis Redding's «That's How Strong My Love Is.» As he played the piano and sang, the judges marveled at his talent. At the end of his performance, Katy gave Kevin a standing ovation, and Lionel told him that his rendition of the song was «incredible.» Luke told Kevin that he loved his smile and that he looked like «someone anyone can talk to.» Lionel then said that he had «so much flavor,» and that it was going to be «such an exciting adventure.»
The judges then remarked that they wanted to hear more, not because they were unsure of him, but because they loved his performance so much. Kevin sang a rousing rendition of Hank Williams' «Jambalaya (On the Bayou),» while the judges accompanied him on percussion instruments. He earned his golden ticket to Hollywood with three yeses. For his Hollywood Week solo performance, Kevin wowed the judges with Al Green's «Tired of Being Alone.» He also showed his creative side during the duets round, when he and his partner Yoli Mayor sang «Anything You Can Do,» playfully dueling with their voices. Luke said that they were «definitely» going through to the next round, which was the Showstopper round. However, during that episode, when the Top 24 was revealed, Kevin was conspicuously absent from the show. Fans began to wonder if he had quit the show or if he had been disqualified for some reason, since it seemed unfathomable that he had not made it into the Top 24.
