Warning: Spoilers for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Jacob Kowalski has always held a unique position as the only major Muggle character in the Fantastic Beasts film series, but Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore just missed the perfect twist to finish his story. Fantastic Beasts 3 focused primarily on the dark wizard Gillert Grindelwald’s rise to power and his burgeoning conflict with Albus Dumbledore. However, while the upcoming clash between two of the most famous wizards of all time defines much of the narrative, the story could still have served Jacob's character with a subtle yet significant twist.
Wanting to lead by legitimate means, Grindelwald managed to get acquitted of his criminal charges. He then used his popularity to become a candidate for the position of Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards. To ensure that Grindelwald won the election, his followers kidnapped a newborn Qilin, a magical creature with the ability to look into a person's soul. According to an ancient tradition, a Qilin picked the next Supreme Mugwump by bowing to the candidate who was the purest of heart. Since Grindelwald was not pure of heart, he killed and bewitched the Qilin, so it would bow to him. However, Newt Scamander and his team, assembled by Albus Dumbledore, protected a second Qilin and transported it to the Supreme Mugwump election. Once there, the Qilin ruined Grindelwald’s plan by bowing to Dumbledore instead. Believing himself unworthy, Dumbledore urged the Qilin to pick someone else, so the Qilin bowed to the Supreme Mugwump candidate Vicência Santos.
