Typically, UNO doesn't involve a board at all, and players simply take turns discarding whichever card they have in their hand that fits the color, number, or type of card most recently played. However, this version is tying in with a game all about exploring, so it makes sense to bring that element to the game. In keeping with the theme of Vikings exploring the globe, the board is gradually traversed as players take turns discarding their cards.
According to the description, the game board allows players to gain special advantages over their competitors, like discarding multiple cards at once, or random event spots that change the way the game is played.
