The has set its sights on a production start date, according to Warner Bros. Discovery.
Just a day after reports surfaced that Paapa Essiedu had been offered the role of Severus Snape, Warner Bros. revealed that the series is eyeing a production start date for next summer, when the when the series will begin filming in Leavesden, England, where Warner Bros. Discovery has a studio.
Alongside the news of a production start schedule, during a presentation at the company’s headquarters in London on Thursday (via Variety), Warner Bros. Discovery also announced that the show had auditioned over 32,000 children for its lead roles. The casting department for the series, WB says, has been reviewing between 500-1,000 tapes per day in an effort to find the stars.
Gardiner and Mylod also said the series would stick to the canonical ages for the characters as they’re mentioned in the books by J.K. Rowling.
The Harry Potter series is described as a “decade-long” project, with each season expected to adapt one book in Rowling’s acclaimed book series. At the moment, the casting search for the next Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley is still underway in the U.K. and Ireland. The chosen child actors must be aged 9 to 11 in April 2025, teasing its potential production start date.
It’s unclear as of now who else will be in the cast, although rumors have circulated about potential other casting, including Dumbledore and Voldemort.
The HBO adaptation is being written by Emmy-winning-producer Francesca Gardiner (Killing Eve, Succession). The series is executive produced by Gardiner, Mark Mylod, Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and long-time Harry Potter franchise producer David Heyman. Mylod, who has worked with HBO on Games of Thrones and The Last of Us, will also helm multiple episodes. It is a production by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
