One Green Lantern went though the one of the toughest ordeals of any ringbearer and was rewarded by becoming one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe. But Kyle Rayner was eventually downgraded from his White Lantern promotion, and the world may be worse for it.
The White Light of Creation is one of the most mysterious aspects of the Emotional Spectrum. Eons ago, the Light was fractured into seven different energies, including the Green Light of Will that powers the Green Lantern Corps. When the White Lanterns were discovered at the end of the War of Light, one particular Green Lantern, Kyle Rayner, embarked on a mission to master the seven parts of the Emotional Spectrum. The young Lantern succeeded and was endowed with the full range of the Spectrum's powers, as well as the healing properties that come with the White Light.

Despite the powerful upgrade Rayner received, things took a turn for the White Lantern when he was charged with doing the impossible in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #17 by Robert Venditti and Ethan Van Sciver. The Blue Lantern Corps' former leader Saint Walker asks Kyle to resurrect the members of his organization, to which Rayner agrees. However the task stresses his abilities past their limits, causing his White Lantern ring to fracture, downgrading Kyle back to a Green Lantern. Though Kyle is OK with his demotion, the event flies in the face of a possible future seen in Green Lantern #20. According to a future version of Sinestro, Kyle remains a White Lantern who leaves his fighting days behind and uses his powers to spread healing across the universe, finding peace by helping those in need.
