Who is the narrator in Mr. Malcolm’s List? Many forms of media — be it television shows or movies — employ narrators to introduce the story to its audience. Mr. Malcolm’s List does the same. The Regency-era period romance, directed by Emma Holly Jones from a screenplay by Suzanne Allain (who also wrote the novel the film is based on), began as a short film before evolving into a feature-length movie.
Mr. Malcolm’s List follows the story of three central figures: Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton), Mr. Jeremiah Malcolm (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù), and Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto). When Julia is publicly humiliated following a night out with Mr. Malcolm, she plots to bring him down a notch by asking her friend Selina to pretend to be his perfect match, thus fulfilling the requirements on his titular list. The film has all the trappings of a period romance, though it is filled with a lot of humor as well. While the story begins with Julia and Selina as children at Mrs. Finch’s Ladies Academy, Mr. Malcolm’s List has a narrator convey the information the audience needs to know about Malcolm and why he’s the most eligible bachelor of London’s social season.

Although not listed in the film’s credits, the narrator at the start of the film is Doña Croll, who plays Mr. Malcolm’s mother Lady Kilbourne. Once audiences hear her voice later on in the movie, the identity of the narrator becomes clear. Lady Kilbourne plays a pivotal role in the film, especially since she knows what’s in Mr. Malcolm’s heart and notices the way her son interacts with Selina.
