Warning: Spoilers for The Flash season 8, episode 18
The ending given to the Arrowverse’s Green Lantern story in The Flash wastes two years of setup across multiple shows. For a while now, the various Arrowverse shows have been slowly telling a story about the possibility of David Ramsey’s John Diggle finally becoming the Green Lantern. His arc seemingly reached a long-awaited resolution in The Flash season 8, ahead of his planned appearance in the Superman & Lois season 2 finale.
In paying off teases and fan theories about Diggle one day being the Arrowverse’s take on the John Stewart version of Green Lantern,Arrow teased a cosmic future for the character in the show’s series finale. Instead of leaving what came next open to interpretation, the Arrowverse used a string of guest appearances to extend Diggle’s story and offer more Green Lantern teases. They all came to a head in The Flash season 8, episode 18, titled “The Man In The Yellow Tie”, when Diggle sought advice from the Reverse-Flash. After getting an opportunity to see the life he could lead as the Green Lantern, the character ultimately picked his family over a chance at a “cosmic destiny”.

The choice Diggle made fits perfectly who he is as a character, but also feels like a waste of all the setup the Arrowverse has been doing since Arrow ended in January 2020. The show undoing it is highly unlikely, especially given the feeling of finality that went along with his decision and the fact that the ring is now gone.
