Fuji regularly uses its X Summit event series to launch new imaging products. For today's conference in Bangkok, Thailand, the company stayed true to course, announcing details on a new camera, the X-S20, an XF 8mm F3.5mm prime lens, and an overhauled smartphone companion app, X App, to replace Fuji Camera Connect.
The X-S20 is the first follow-up to the X-S10, a best of the year pick in 2019. The new version builds on the same concept that made the original a winner: it's a light, carry-friendly mirrorless with an SLR-style body, stabilized sensor, and PASM controls. The centered viewfinder and industry standard controls make it a bit more of a general, crowd pleasing camera, versus something like the corner viewfinder X-E4 and its shutter speed dial.
For the sequel, Fuji upgraded the X-S20 to run off the same NP-W235 battery that drives the X-T5 and X-H2 family, more than doubling the X-S10's 325-picture rating to 750 shots per charge. It's also put in the latest 5th generation image processor, a decision that adds subject recognition focus, 10-bit 4:2:2 video, and improved 7-stop stabilization.
The camera is getting a new Vlog position on its mode dial that tunes video settings for the best self-recorded results. Vlog mode turns on face- and eye-detection and adds touch controls to swap the camera to Background Defocus mode, or tune the autofocus for product reviews. Fuji is copying some things from the Sony ZV-E10 here, but is billing the X-S20 as a hybrid camera, not one made just for video.
To that point, the X-S20 includes an EVF to please still photogs, and still requires videographers to plug in an external mic for clear audio. A headphone jack is included for monitoring, a useful feature for checking audio
