NVIDIA had a strong presence at SIGGRAPH 2023 thanks to the various announcements made by CEO Jensen Huang and multiple new research fields presented at the event. On the last day of SIGGRAPH 2023, NVIDIA unveiled yet another one called FlexiCubes.
Described as a new approach for generating high quality meshes in 3D pipelines, FlexiCubes aims to significantly improve 3D models with the power of AI. This mesh generation method introduces so-called flexible parameters that can accurately tweak the generated mesh. According to NVIDIA, updating these parameters during optimization leads to greatly improved mesh quality.
FlexiCubes can be used as a replacement for existing mesh extraction techniques like marching cubes. It generates tetrahedral meshes, doing a better job of representing fine details in complex shapes.
The generated 3D meshes are also well-suited for physics simulations, where mesh quality is especially important to make simulations efficient and robust.
This new method developed by NVIDIA researchers could prove useful in a number of applications, from game development to film rendering of 3D objects. It may be a while before FlexiCubes is implemented in a commercial game, though.
