Samsung is branching out with an unexpected new product: a recipe-recommendation platform called Samsung Food.
The service has a catalog of more than 160,000 recipes, which include recommendations from influencers. It's not totally divorced from Samsung's interests: Samsung Food can be used to remotely control the company’s kitchen appliances, such as preheating an oven, setting the timer, or loading a recipe's cook settings.
Samsung built the platform from Whisk, a cooking app it acquired in 2019. The company has since been tapping AI so Samsung Food can personalize your recipe recommendations based on your preferences and food seasonality.
Samsung Food, which is available as app and on the web, can also analyze a recipe and create a shopping list for all the ingredients.
The company is offering the service so Samsung customers can essentially source all their cooking needs from the company’s vast ecosystem of products, which includes smartphones, smart refrigerators, and stoves. There’s also some interesting integrations between Samsung Food and the company’s appliances. For example, Samsung Food can provide recipe recommendations based on a list of available food items you normally store in the refrigerator.
The service can also tweak a recipe to fit your dietary needs. “For example, users can convert a recipe into a vegan or vegetarian version or make other changes to create a recipe that is more nutritionally balanced or incorporates in-stock ingredients,” the company said. “Users will even be able to create fusion recipes, such as Korean versions of Italian dishes, and adjust cook time or skill level of recipes.”
Expect Samsung to add more functions over time. This includes integrating Samsung Food with Samsung
