Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, says that players will get a deeper understanding of Sephiroth than they ever have before and that they might "truly feel bad" for him after getting to know him.
Despite his legendary status as one of gaming's most iconic villains, Sephiroth doesn't actually appear all that much in the original version of Final Fantasy 7. That was changed in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, where he shows up much earlier in the story and has more of a presence overall in Midgar.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, that focus on Sephiroth seems to be even bigger in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, something that's been made clear ever since the game's reveal trailer showed him and Cloud walking side-by-side together. We've already seen some examples of Sephiroth having more of a presence in Rebirth (including the scene where he calls Cloud a "puppy"), but it looks like we've barely scratched the surface.
Game Informer recently had the chance to go hands-on with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and find out a ton of new information about the game, including how Cait Sith plays, and the tease of a particularly mind-blowing scene. Game Informer also talked to the developers about how Sephiroth is being handled in this game, which revealed that Rebirth is going to go into more detail on his backstory than before.
While chatting to the game's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, about Sephiroth's role in the story, Hamaguchi revealed that one of the team's main goals with the character was to show how he fell from grace and became the villain we all know him as. Not only that, but they wanted the player to "truly feel bad" for him when they uncover what happened in his life to make him the way he was.
