Until Dawn Movie Adaptation of PlayStation Horror Game in the Works
Annabelle Creation’s David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) and Gary Dauberman reteam for an, adapting the PS4 horror game for the big screen.
The Hollywood Reporter had the exclusive on the news of the latest PlayStation exclusive to make the jump to film and television in the wake of Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo, and HBO’s The Last Of Us.
Gary Dauberman is the screenwriter behind hit horror films such as It, Annabelle, and The Nun. He is doing a pass on the script originally written by Blair Butler (The Invitation).
David F. Sanberg had a torrid time of it recently with the Shazam! films for Warner Bros. and looks set to get back into horror. His short Lights Out became a successful feature length horror hit that put his name on the map, landing him the job on Annabelle Creation.
Until Dawn was released for PS4 in 2015, and featured future Oscar winner Rami Malek and Scream star Hayden Panettiere among its cast. The game saw a group of friends reuniting at a mountain retreat after the death of a friend a year earlier. The reunion turns sour when outside forces begin to hunt down the group one by one. Players could make split-second decisions to affect who does and doesn’t survive the night, allowing a ”play-your-own horror movie” feel to the proceedings.
Developer Supermassive Games went on to make similar games with The Dark Pictures Anthology, which featured the likes of Shawn Ashmore, Jessie Buckley, and Will Poulter. In 2022, it threw horror icons Ted Raimi, David Arquette, Lance Henriksen, and Lin Shaye into a brand new horror game The Quarry.
It’s not yet known if the Until Dawn movie will stick to what the game did from a narrative perspective. but Screen gems has confirmed it will be an R-rated love letter to the horror genre, centering on an ensemble cast.
