Final Fantasy fans have been calling on Square Enix to remake the sixth game for years now, but FF7 Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase says a major roadblock preventing those dreams from coming true is its scope.
In an interview with YouTuber Julien Chièze (as reported by VGC), Kitase was asked to elaborate on a comment he made last year that a "Final Fantasy 6 remake would be difficult", despite many inside of the company also asking him about it.
Kitase says that Rebirth took nearly ten years to develop, which is an enormous amount of time on its own. But he believes that FF6 would take double that given all of its characters.
As translated by @ShinraArch on Twitter, "[Kitase] says there are a lot of people inside the company who want to remake [Final Fantasy 6], but he unfortunately can't respond in the affirmative, which bums him out."
Final Fantasy 6 turns 30 years old this year, having released in April of 1994. It's a big milestone for one of the most iconic games in the series, and while there isn't a remake on the horizon, there have been many iterations and ports over the years. It began life as a SNES game but was later released on PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, and mobile, Most recently, there was a Pxiel Remaster released in 2022, bringing the game to modern platforms.
We looked into whether the Pixel Remaster bundle is worth buying, which you can read here.
Maybe one day it'll get a similar remake treatment as 7, but for now, it looks unlikely that 6 will be reimagined for current-gen. That being said, there are plenty of other Final Fantasy games fans also want to see remade, with 9 often cropping up as one of the more popular picks. An insider even reported early last year that such a remake is real.
Granted, after Rebirth, we still have the third part of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy to look forward to, so if a remake of 9 is in fact on the cards, it'll be a while yet before we hear about it.
