The resurgence of the Fallout games is seemingly causing issues with popular modding portal Nexusmods.
The debut of the Fallout TV series on Amazon earlier this month has caused sales for the Fallout games to soar - especially in Europe where Fallout 4 claimed the first spot in the weekly charts. The renaissance of the Fallout games, however, also appears to have an effect on the modding community with tons of PC players once again looking for mods for the Fallout games. The status page for the popular modding website Nexusmods reports that it's "experiencing much more traffic than usual due to the popularity of the Fallout TV series". According to Nexusmods, the team has deployed additional resources and it monitoring the uptime and performance across the network. At the time of writing, the portal is still experiencing issues due to high demand.
On X, user @HazzadorGaming posted a graph of mod downloads between April 2022 and now, showing the gigantic increase in downloads in this month. Following this post from HazzadorGamin, we also took a look at downloads at Nexusmods for Fallout 4. As can be seen in the graph below, mod downloads for Fallout 4 increased to nearly 70 million in April 2024 compared to around 30 million in July 2023. We've also included a graph showing daily downloads for Fallout 4 - it's clear that downloads have increased enormously since the debut of the TV show on April 10th. A similar increase in mod popularity can be seen for other Fallout entries, including the original Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 76.
It will be interesting to see how his resparked interest in the Fallout games will evolve in the weeks to come. Of course, it's possible that interest will somewhat fade away following the hype caused by Amazon's TV show. As covered some days ago, the TV show will get a second season following
