Expedia is testing a beta ChatGPT interface to help people plan their vacations.
The in-app AI, rolling out globally in English on the Expedia iOS app, can recommend places to go, where to stay, how to get around, and what to see and do. It also automatically creates a "trip" and saves hotel options based on your conversation.
Expedia warns that AI chatbots are a work in progress; hence the "beta" tag. "While many measures have been taken to limit inaccurate results and inappropriate responses, at times the experience may not work exactly as expected," the company says.
The OpenAI collaboration allows Expedia to "rapidly evolve the experience" based on how people interact with it, Expedia says.
Last month, OpenAI introduced a browsing capability for ChatGPT via support for plugins. It invited several third-party internet services to create their own plugins, inculding Expedia, OpenTable, Instacart, Slack, Shopify, and Kayak among others.
Expedia also uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to narrow down things like hotel location, room type, date ranges, and prices to deliver personalized trip options. Its Price Tracking function, meanwhile, uses AI and ML to compare costs with historical trends and track fluctuations, and it has an AI-powered Virtual Agent.
"Every great trip can be made or lost while planning and shopping," says Peter Kern, vice chairman and CEO of Expedia Group. "By integrating ChatGPT into the Expedia app and combining it with our other AI-based shopping capabilities...we can now offer travelers an even more intuitive way to build their perfect trip."
