Ewan McGregor is replaced with Alec Guinness in a new deepfake Obi-Wan Kenobi video. McGregor first joined the Star Wars universe in the prequel film Episode I — The Phantom Menace, where he was cast in the role of a young Obi-Wan Kenobi. He continued in the role for the remaining two prequel films. After 17 years, McGregor recently returned as the iconic figure in the new Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series. Set 10 years after the fall of the Jedi Order and rise of the Galactic Empire in Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi sees McGregor's titular Jedi hiding on the desert planet of Tatooine as he watches over a young Luke Skywalker from afar.
In the original Star Wars trilogy, Obi-Wan Kenobi was played by Sir Alec Guinness. Notable for his roles in Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago, and The Bridge on the River Kwai, the actor's casting in Star Wars was a significant choice from George Lucas. Although his character was ultimately killed in Episode IV — A New Hope, Kenobi returned in ethereal form as a Force ghost, communicating with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Yoda (Frank Oz). As McGregor revisited the role in the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series, he has admitted that he changed his mannerisms and voice from the prequels to more closely resemble Guinness' version of Obi-Wan as the character neared the later Kenobi's age.
