A brand-new Monster Hunter game is coming. Capcom revealed Monster Hunter Wilds on Thursday at The Game Awards 2023, showing off its successor to 2018’s immensely popular Monster Hunter: World.
Monster Hunter Wilds is coming sometime in 2025 to PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, according to the game’s first trailer. Longtime Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto said Monster Hunter fans can expect more information in summer 2024. In a separate video, Tsujimoto said that Monster Hunter Wilds will feature “a new level of detailed creatures and ecosystems,” hinting that the game’s reveal trailer includes other hidden details.
Wilds appears to be a fully open-world evolution of the Monster Hunter franchise, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2024. The first game in the franchise, Monster Hunter for Sony’s PlayStation 2, was released in 2004. The series’ popularity exploded with subsequent releases, Monster Hunter G and Monster Hunter Portable, leading Capcom to develop more than 20 sequels, expansions, and spinoffs.
Monster Hunter: World became the bestselling game in the franchise and Capcom’s bestselling game ever, with more than 19 million copies sold. World’s Iceborne expansion, released in 2019, sold more than 10 million units. The most recent mainline game in the franchise, Monster Hunter: Rise, has sold 13.6 million units. Capcom and Pokémon Go developer Niantic recently released a mobile spinoff game, Monster Hunter Now.
