Garfield is making a return to the silver screen next year with The Garfield Movie, with Chris Pratt voicing the lasagne-loving feline himself. However, that movie won't be the end of Garfield's exploits in the future, as it was revealed that a video game spinoff is currently in development, which will more than likely release before or alongside the movie's launch.
First reported by Deadline, a new Sino-American fund called Stars-Hana is the money behind the project, which plans to turn several movies by famous directors into video games. Stars-Hana will be working with the likes of Tencent, DreamSky Technology, HYJZ and Forevernine to adapt multiple movies, one of which being The Garfield Movie.
Further details about this Garfield game are currently unknown, though I don't think I need to tell you that it won't be a sprawling, open world RPG. More likely, it will either be a mobile title that can be pushed out relatively quickly to try and help boost the visibility of the movie, or it will be a budget platformer that will take us back to the good ol' days of dodgy licensed video game adaptations.
Then again, Garfield isn't exactly a stranger to the video game scene. He's been involved in a surprising number of video games over the years, such as more recent titles like Garfield Lasagne Party and Garfield Kart: Furious Racing. I can't really recommend you go out and buy those games unless you're Garfield's number one fan, but him getting a spinoff video game for an upcoming movie isn't too shocking, even if it's going to be a little pointless.
We may even see more Garfield games in the future, as French publisher Microids promised it had three Garfield games in development back in 2022.
