If you’re still hungover from all the project announcements coming out of San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, man so are we. But! Hope springs eternal, much like the TV schedule that’s always onto the next new thing — with this week being no exception.
Personally, of this crop I’ll be most eagerly anticipating the House of the Dragon season 2 finale, a show that has really upped its already considerable game with its latest run. There’s also Batman: Caped Crusader, which promises to bring back stark, vivid Batman animation. And while it’s not on the list, also notable is the return (from one week off with the Olympics broadcast in Japan) of My Hero Academia, which left us on a particularly tragic and sour note.
Here’s the best new TV premieres and finales for this week.
Genre: Murder mystery
Release date: August 1
Based on the novel by: Holly Jackson
Cast: Emma Myers, Zain Iqbal, Anna Maxwell Martin, and more
You’re used to seeing Emma Myers as a werewolf roommate in Wednesday; but now, she gets to play a regular girl — well, as regular a girl as you can be when you’re also a 17-year-old investigating a murder. Pip (Myers) is a high school senior who’s sucked into the murder-suicide that rocked her small town five years ago, and discovering that just maybe it isn’t what people thought it was.
Genre: Wacky sci-fi
Release date: July 29 with one episode
Showrunner/creator: Matt Groening
Cast: John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, and more
Futurama is coming back (just like it always is). At this point it’s season 12 of Futurama, you don’t need me to tell you if you’re going to like it. So I’ll just include the important information: On Hulu, and releasing one episode per week.
Genre: High fantasy drama
Release date: August 5 at 9 p.m.
Showrunner/creator: Ryan Condal
Cast: Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Ewan Mitchell, and more
Season 2 has been a helluva war, and it’s just getting started (the civil war, that is; the season is wrapping up, as the subhed might suggest).
