Baldur's Gate 3 has some truly despicable characters for you to meet, including a lady who tries to feed a child to a snake, a horrible hag with a passion for kidnapping, and a cold-blooded Drow woman that wants to slaughter an entire camp of Tieflings. You'll encounter all of those people in just Act 1, which goes to show you just how much competition there is to be named the most hated character in all of Baldur's Gate 3.
It's a title that Ironhand Gnomes leader Wulbren Bongle had absolutely no trouble earning though, as he was named multiple times in a recent thread on the Baldur's Gate 3 subreddit discussing the worst NPCs in the game. It's easy to see why he's loathed too, as not only is he incredibly manipulative and rude, but he also shows very little gratitude for being saved from Moonrise Towers, which is where you'll first encounter him.
Not only that, but he's also incredibly rude to a fellow deep gnome called Barcus, a longtime friend of Wulbren who is also the person who asks you to go and save him in the first place. After not seeing Barcas for a while, Wulbren is incredibly cold and distant, choosing to obsess over his hatred of Gondians rather than catch up with an old friend. It also doesn't help that Barcas is a bit of a fan favorite character, so being mean to him pretty much earns you the death sentence among the Baldur's Gate 3 fanbase.
Barcus is beloved. Wulbren is a waste of space.
On top of all the colorful language that players use to describe Wulbren, most people talking about him seem to take a lot of joy in bad-mouthing him and claim that Barcas deserves a lot better than a guy who emotionally abuses and takes advantage of him.
