No plans for New Year's Eve? Fret not, the Baldur's Gate 3 fanbase is coming to the rescue. Instead of going out to the pub, boot up a save and blow up Gale.
Yep, to usher in the new year, some Baldur's Gate 3 players are planning to get Gale to blow himself up in time with the countdown. If you choose to join in, you won't be alone, as an entire group of Baldur's Gate fans plan to simultaneously detonate the wizard as soon as 2024 kicks off.
This event was first reported on by GamesRadar+, having been shared around the Baldur's Gate fanbase on social media. It originated from a Polish Facebook group, which set up a reminder for everyone to set off Gale's orb at the same time later tonight.
If you want to get in on the fun, make sure you're in Act 2. As soon as you're about to leave the Act 1 area, either through the Underdark or the Mountain Pass, you'll meet Elminster, who asks to speak with Gale. Long story short, Gale's timebomb is paused, and he's given the ability to detonate it at will instead.
Story-wise, you're expected to only consider the option at a certain point in Act 2, and again in Act 3, but you can actually blow him up whenever you want. As soon as the chat with Elminster is over, Gale gains the ability to detonate the netherese orb in his list of attacks, appearing as an option in battle. Pro tip, don't use it in a fight - he will kill himself and everything around him, including you. I tried getting him as far away from my party as possible before detonating it, but it was an automatic game over. But it's also a fun start to 2024, so why not?
Blowing Gale up in Act 2 actually unlocks a secret ending - although you probably won't like it very much.
Poor Gale has really been through it in this fanbase.
