The latest quarterly earnings report for Sony reveals Astro Bot has sold 1.5 million copies during its first nine weeks on the market, as of 3rd November 2024. This means it's already selling better than the likes of Demon's Souls, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Returnal across roughly the same timespan after launch.
What makes the stat more interesting is the fact that Sony considers 37 per cent of those 1.5 million buyers to be «new users». According to the firm, a «new user» is someone who hasn't purchased any other first-party game in the past two years, but did choose to pick up Astro Bot. As such, the platforming robot brought back over one-third of Sony's first-party audience who skipped the likes of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Stellar Blade.
All the early signs over the past few months have pointed towards Astro Bot being a sales success, as it was named the second best-selling game in the USA during September and doing better than «basically every new 3D platform game in the last 10 years» except for Super Mario, said Christopher Dring of GamesIndustry.biz.

Good games get people on your console, plain and simple.
It's good that it is selling and will likely make a profit, just a bit underwhelming considering how good the game actually is. As long as we get more 3D platformers I'm happy.
I wonder how they gather that “new user” data. It’s an interesting statistic and I don’t
