Lucid Motors will provide the battery technology for Aston Martin's future EV lineup. The vehicles will be sold under the Aston Martin brand, with Lucid's powertrain technology under the hood.
"The relationship, the first of its kind for Lucid, will give Aston Martin access to world-leading electric powertrain technology, which is engineered and manufactured exclusively in-house by Lucid, to power future Aston Martin battery electric vehicles," says Lucid.
The two brands were founded nearly 100 years apart. Aston Martin dates back to 1913 while Lucide emerged in 2007. But Lucid's technology will now help the iconic British automaker accelerate its goal to fully electrify its lineup by 2030.
Aston Martin's first plug-in hybrid, the Valhalla, debuts in 2024. Its first fully electric vehicle will follow in 2025. Details are light, but the brand says(Opens in a new window) the lineup will have "sleek, wind-cheating bodywork—facilitated by no longer needing to feed air to a hungry internal combustion engine."
Aston Martin will pay Lucid upwards of $450 million to use its proprietary battery, charging, and motor technology—a nice influx of cash for Lucid, which has struggled(Opens in a new window) to hit revenue, profit, and production goals this year. Lucid will also become an Aston Martin shareholder.
