The next entry in the legendary Assassin's Creed franchise could be taking place in Baghdad, according to recent rumors. This upcoming installment will be following 2020's Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, which introduced several new characters and concepts to the sprawling in-game universe.
The Assassin's Creed series is defined by a number of staples, not the least of which being its varying focus on different settings and eras. The first game in the franchise took place in the Middle East during The Third Crusade, and developer Ubisoft surprised fans by setting Assassin's Creed II in Renaissance Italy. The series stayed planted in this era for a few entries before visiting settings like colonial America, the Caribbean, and the French revolution. When Ubisoft switched gears with the series a few years ago and turned it into a light RPG, Assassin's Creed took players to ancient Egypt, Greece, and England. Following each release, it is not uncommon for fans to speculate and theorize about where the series could go next.

While the setting for the next game has yet to be officially announced, Bloomberg (via Eurogamer) reports that sources close to the development have stated that the next entry will include Baghdad as an explorable city. The game, which was originally intended to be yet another expansion for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, will reportedly follow the fan-favorite character Basim in his adventures south of England.
