Ziggurat Interactive and Limited Run Games have announced that their two-for-one classic pack, A Boy and His Blob Retro Collection will release on Switch, PS4, and PS5 on October 17, 2023. A PC version is in the works for a later date.
A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia was released on the NES in 1990, and it’s an odd one for the time period. In a lot of ways, it feels more like an early home computer game than a late NES title. It’s very freeform, and the world itself is like a very big puzzle. It takes a while to acclimate to it, and then you’ll likely need a few attempts at the game to finally see the end. It’s not impossible. It’s just a little overwhelming and unforgiving.
The collection also includes The Rescue of Blobette (also known as David Crane’s The Rescue of Blobette Starring a Boy and His Blob) is very similar but with smaller flipscreens and fewer colors.
Both games were developed by the legendary David Crane, who is best known for his work in Pitfall. The two games have their charm, but I don’t think they’re the best from the developer. Nonetheless, they’re unique, which counts for something.
Both games have been converted to Limited Run Games’ proprietary Carbon Engine. The Collection was available physically on PS4, PS5, and Switch, as well as separately as NES and GameBoy reissues, but those sold out. If you missed them, here’s your chance to get them digitally.
A Boy and His Blob Retro Collection releases digitally on Switch, PS4, and PS5 on October 17, 2023. Release for the PC version is unannounced.
