One of the biggest holidays on the geek calendar is Free Comic Book Day(Opens in a new window), which happens on the first Saturday in May of each year. It’s a way for shop owners to attract audiences, publishers to promote their hot upcoming offerings, and readers to, well, get free comic books.
But deciding what to claim can be a little overwhelming, especially if your local store limits the number of selections you can make. We ran through the slate of free comic books, and these are the ones that you won't want to miss.
Ready for a surprise? The most successful cartoonist in the world doesn’t draw Spider-Man or Batman; he draws the adventures of a high school principal who fights evil in his tighty-whiteys. Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants(Opens in a new window) and Dog Man(Opens in a new window) books routinely sell millions of copies, and they hit that sweet spot between all-ages fun and sly winks for adults. Graphix Books(Opens in a new window) presents an epic team-up of all of Pilkey’s characters.
DC Comics has a whopping five titles in its FCBD offerings, and they all look cool. There’s a lead-in to its next crossover, Knight Terrors(Opens in a new window); a standalone Lois Lane adventure; a book that introduces some new characters; and a young-adult-oriented "Clark & Lex" book. But if you can pick only one, opt for the Dawn of DC Primer(Opens in a new window), written by Joshua Williamson with art by Leandro Fernandez.
