Summons are powerful creatures in that your party can call upon as the best allies to help in tough fights. Only one red Materia orb containing a beast of this magnitude can be carried by your whole team, so picking the strongest Summon can be tricky. You'll have to learn which abilities and attacks Summons use to determine which one to bring into your next battle.
Most of the time, a Summon's location in is as a boss fight in Chadley's Combat Simulator. Your party often has to defeat a Summon in battle to unlock its Materia, but there are a few of these creatures in your inventory when you begin Chapter 2. Stronger Summons are typically found with Chadley in later regions, so keep checking in with the scientist as you progress.

Chocobo Kick (1 ATB) — Run toward an enemy and unleash a powerful kick. Significantly increases stagger.
Moogle Blast (1 ATB) — Throw a bomb that has a wide blast range.
Stampede — Deals a large amount of Wind damage.
One of the starting Summon Materia your party has is Chocobo & Moogle, an ally that deals Wind and non-elemental damage to your enemies equally. Unlike the other starting Summons Ifrit and Shiva, more enemies in the early Chapters have weaknesses to Wind that you can exploit. Boosts to Magic stats will also help your party take advantage of the best Materia in you get first in your adventure.

Circuitous Bolt (2 ATB) — Shoot a lightning bolt in a circular arc.
