Yu-Gi-Oh Sets New World Record

A new Guinness World Record was set during a recent Yu-Gi-Oh card game tournament in Tokyo, Japan. While the original Yu-Gi-Oh manga wasn’t always centered around the Duel Monsters card game, it has become one of the most recognizable elements of the franchise. Konami started producing a physical Yu-Gi-Oh card game back in 1999, with Upper Deck bringing it to the US in 2002. Since then, Yu-Gi-Oh has become one of the highest-selling card games in the world, spawning several video games in the process.

To this day, real-life Yu-Gi-Oh card game tournaments are held in venues around the world, where fans of all ages gather to challenge each other in action-packed duels. Said tournaments have been home to many unforgettable moments, like when a Yu-Gi-Oh player managed to pull off the impossible and summon the all-powerful Exodia during November’s Yu-Gi-Oh Championship Series (YCS) Indianapolis 2023 event.

Even more history was made during the Yu-Gi-Oh Championship Series Japan Tokyo 2024 event earlier this week, which has set the Guinness World Record for both the most entrants in a single trading card game tournament and the largest number of people playing against each other in the same venue at the same time. Konami itself reported the milestone, which was achieved when 7,443 participants registered for the two-day event at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center. This is only the second time that a Yu-Gi-Oh card game tournament broke a record, with the first being the 100th Yu-Gi-Oh Championship Series in Long Beach, California back in 2012.
