Looks like success is contagious, and the industry is having a humdinger of a year. Hot on the heels of Street Fighter 6’s humongous launch, Blizzard has now confirmed that Diablo 4 is its biggest launch ever. The organisation – part of a $69 billion buyout attempt from Microsoft – didn’t share concrete sales numbers in a press release, but noted that the title only officially launched today. There was, however, an Early Access period which started on 1st June.
“Diablo 4, the highly anticipated new instalment of the iconic Diablo series, is now live,” its press release pointed out. “Already, it is Blizzard Entertainment's fastest-selling game of all time, with Blizzard's highest pre-launch unit sales ever on both console and PC. In the four days since early access started on 1st June, Diablo 4 has been played for 93 million hours, or over 10,000 years – the equivalent playing 24 hours a day since the beginning of human civilization.”
It should be noted that Blizzard hasn’t released many full-price titles across PC and consoles simultaneously, with Overwatch in 2016 being the last example. (Overwatch 2 was, of course, free-to-play.) However, it’s clear this game is posting some pretty extraordinary metrics, so that’s not an attempt to downplay its success.
We thought the game was an absolute smash hit in our Diablo 4 PS5 review, and if you’re just getting into it today, then we recommend you check out our Diablo 4 guide. Did you grab the game yet? Smite us in the comments section below.
